Learning how to play Pok-A-Tok

Year 5 have been learning about the challenging, ancient game of Pok-A-Tok that will help them with their next piece of writing. Pok-A-Tok was a popular game played by The Mayans thousands of years ago. The aim of the game was to pass a solid, rubber ball through a hoop on either side of a high, walled stadium to score points. Games would usually last all day so if a team mananged to score a point, the game would end. Winners would be rewarded with a glorious feast and the losing team risked being sacrified to the gods.
Year 5 were very excited to have a go playing Pok-A-Tok. However, there was one rule they needed to consider...players were not allowed to use their hands or feet! They worked together in two teams to try and throw the ball through the hoop and managed to succeed.
The children were very proud of their teamwork and their efforts during this highly entertaining lesson! I am looking forward to reading their final pieces of writing about this wonderful, exciting game.
