Farm Visit

Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 9:57am

On Wednesday, the Key Stage One children went to Sugar Brook Farm in Altrincham. For most of the children, it was their very first school trip. They were incredibly excited! We had such a busy day with Farmer John and Kate from the Farm Trust. We learned all about the grains grown on the farm by comparing how they looked. We even had a go at grinding the wheat into flour. We learned that it took a lot of wheat to make just a few loaves of bread when we went out into the enormous fields. We even got to dig in the soil to see some barley growing.

Farmer John had a few animals on his farm too. Feeding the sheep and cows the grain he grew was fun if a little ticklish! Aadhvik was a caring farmer of the sheep. Some of the chickens liked to fly high up into the hay bales in the barn and we could climb that high. But we got to go into the chicken enclosure to meet the ones on the ground. We found that they had laid lots of eggs in their hen house but it was tricky to be careful because the eggs cracked if we dropped them.

Can you guess where we ate our lunch? We had a giant picnic mat spread out in Farmer Johns's garden for us all to sit down and enjoy our lunch outside. It was great to relax and chat with our friends.

After lunch, we went for a play on the big green, grassy field where the sheep graze. Lots of children chased around playing tag. Then it was time to find the orchard so we raced across the big wheat fields to find the apple trees.

After that, we did some apple tasting with Kate. She chopped up different kinds of apples, Some of the apples were green, some were brown and some were green. The brown ones were sweet and some of the green ones were really sour. Everyone got to turn the wheel on the machine that crushed the apples.Brooke was amazingly strong at turning the wheel. Frankie was really quick at filling up the funnel when we needed more apples. Finally, Farmer John showed us how to press the crushed apples to squeeze out the juice and we all got to taste the delicious apple juice. Yum!
