Science

The aim at St Joseph’s is to provide all children with a high quality Science curriculum, which is exciting and practical with hands on experiences. We aim to have both indoor and outdoor Science and we encourage curiosity and questioning. We intend to deliver stimulating experiences that will help our children secure and extend their knowledge to become confident, lifelong learners who will explore the world around them.

At St Joseph’s we use the Pearson Science Bug scheme to support our planning and to support a successful progression learning. We have taken part in the British Science Week and have had Science days for the whole school.

The National Curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all children:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • Are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this.

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the Working Scientifically skills are built-on and developed throughout children’s time at the school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

Our science leader is Mrs Buckley. IMG_20210625_152423501.jpg

" Hello, my name is Mrs Buckley and I lead Science here at St Joseph’s.

I have taught at St Joseph’s since 2002, and I love being able to share my love of science with the children.

I love to see children learning practically, exploring the world around them whilst developing skills and knowledge.

I personally enjoy investigating science outdoors and enjoy exploring nature in the local area.

I have recently set up the garden project, where we are growing our own fruit and vegetables."
